Excursion to Essaouira and the Atlantic coast is one of the best excursions that can be done from Marrakech to visit the Medina of Essoaouira and enjoy its atmosphere and the air of the Atlantic. It is a day trip to Essaouira after doing about 170 kms from Marrakesh to reach the coastal city that hugs the sea of the Atlantic Ocean. Essaouira was founded by the Portuguese in the 18th century and they named it “Mogador. It was a series of fortresses erected in the 15th century. In 1760 the walls of the old mogador were built. The mixture of Moroccan and French architecture is due to the fact that a captive French architect, Theodore Cornut, designed it under the orders of Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdullah. In the 19th century, Mogador was the only port (outside of Tangier) that was open to European trade. This commercial protected status attracted British merchants, who settled in the Kasbah and a large Jewish community. The city went into decline during the early 20th century as the French protectorate favored Casablanca and the Jewish community left (abandoned). However, thanks to tourism (Gnawas the Festival) and its beautiful fishing port. The Berber name means wall, a reference to the fortress walls that surround the medina of Essaouira.
